Reseller tax check

Using your Depop sales CSV for your tax return

Depop lets you download your sales as a CSV file. It has the numbers you need. It won't tell you whether you need to tell HMRC, or how much profit to report.

1. Download your sales

Do this on a computer, not in the app. Go to your Selling Hub, open Stats and download your sales. If one download doesn't cover the whole year, download each period. You can add all the files together.

2. Split by tax year

Your return covers 6 April to 5 April. Depop's report to HMRC covers January to December. A sale on 4 April belongs to the previous tax year, and one on 6 April to the next.

3. Add what the items cost you

The CSV shows what you sold things for and the fees Depop took. It doesn't know what you paid for each item. Add those costs, plus packaging and any postage you paid yourself.

4. Compare against £1,000

If you're buying to resell, the £1,000 trading allowance is tested against your total sales before costs. At £1,000 or less, you may not need to tell HMRC. Above it, you register for Self Assessment and deduct either £1,000 or your real costs, whichever leaves you less profit. (GOV.UK) If you're only selling your own clothes, you're unlikely to owe tax at all.

Do it in one go

Drop your Depop CSV files into the reseller tax check. It reads the columns, splits your sales into tax years, adds your fees and costs, and gives you the answer for each year. It runs in your browser and your file isn't uploaded.

Check your own sales

Drop in your sales file or type your totals. You get your profit for each tax year and whether you need to tell HMRC. Your file never leaves your browser.
